There's a foundation in Ottawa that goes about its work quietly, but over the last 15 years it has helped hundreds of smaller charitable organizations.
The Community Foundation of Ottawa marked its 15th birthday last night at the National Press Club with the launch of a new book recounting the organization's colourful and charitable history. The foundation receives monetary gifts, which it invests and, in turn, promotes philanthropy by doling out the interest to smaller charitable groups for various projects.
The book, People. Partnerships. Community: The first 15 years of the Community Foundation of Ottawa, was written by local writer Valerie Knowles on and off over the last year and a half. She said she was happy with the outcome and said she was rewarded by meeting people she might not have had the chance to meet otherwise.
Community values
"There are always frustrations, but it was an interesting undertaking for me," she said.
Dr. Maureen Molot, the chairwoman of the foundation's board, said the book deals with more than just the organization.
"You'll learn a lot about our community and its values," she explained.
Copies of the book are available through the foundation's offices for $10 each.
